Japan was named the “World’s Most Attractive Country” in the Reader Travel Awards 2025, conducted by leading British travel magazine Wanderlust. This marks the first time Japan has topped the list in 13 years, since 2012.
The awards are an annual reader-voted ranking conducted by Wanderlust, the UK’s largest travel magazine with the largest circulation since its launch in 1993, and are comprised of 22 categories, including countries, cities, and regions around the world and Europe. A record 208,000 people participated in the 2025 poll, generating over 4.8 million votes.
This year, Tokyo ranked second in the “World’s Most Attractive City” category, and Hokkaido ranked seventh in the “World’s Most Attractive Region” category. Japan was also ranked fourth in both the “Culture & Heritage” and “Gourmet” categories as the world’s most attractive destination.
George Kypoulos, editor-in-chief of Wanderlust, commented that Japan attracts travelers not only with the usual suspects like Tokyo and Kyoto, but also with “hidden regions that evoke the soul of Japan,” such as the remote islands of Okinawa, Kanazawa’s craft district, the mountainous region of Nagano, and Fukuoka’s culinary culture.
The awards selected Japan as a “destination that combines innovation, precision, and tradition, making it an appealing destination for curious travelers who want to go beyond the usual spots.”

Furthermore, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the cutting-edge AI analysis system Cassandra announced that Japan also ranked second in the 2025 Global Composite Index.
This AI collects all economic data from countries around the world in real time, creating the latest global economic rankings based solely on pure facts, completely free of bias and wishful thinking.
